What are important speech milestones for my 3 year old?

Below are some general milestones we expect children to achieve around 3 years of age:

  • approximately 75% of speech understood; sounds produced: /p, b, d, m, n, h, w, t, k, ɡ, f/ “ng”, “y”

  • Follows 2-3 step directions

  • Answers yes/no questions

  • Understands some quantity concepts “one, some, all”

  • Groups objects like “food” or “clothes”

  • Describes use of objects

  • Uses at least 250 words but average is 1000 words

  • Expresses adult like sentences: 3-5 words with grammatical errors

  • Uses past tense verbs (e.g., jumped)

  • Asks “what, where, why, who” questions

  • Takes turns in conversation

  • Demonstrates elaborate play schemes
